Существующее сооружение - осуществлённое в 1990-х гг внешнее воссоздание одноимённого храма, созданного в XIX в. На стенах храма были начертаны имена офицеров Русской армии, павших в войне 1812 г и иных по времени близких военных походах. Оригинал храма был воздвигнут в память о наполеоновском нашествии по проекту архитектора Константина Тона. Строительство продолжалось почти 44 г: храм был заложен 23 сент 1839 г, освящён - 26 мая 1883 г. Здание храма было разрушено в разгар сталинской реконструкции города 5 декабря 1931 г. Заново отстроено неподалёку от прежнего места в 1994-97 гг.
